To begin, let’s discuss the initial Role-Based exam (VMware Cloud Infrastructure Administrator). It is important to note that this exam is in its beta phase. Consequently, you will not receive a pass or fail outcome until this phase concludes and we have analyzed the results. The duration of the beta phase may differ, contingent upon the number of times the exam has been taken. Once it transitions into a production exam, your score report will be provided.

1 VMware Certified – Cloud Infrastructure Administrator

The VMware Cloud Infrastructure Administrator certification validates an individual’s ability to install, configure, and maintain private and hybrid VMware Cloud infrastructure solutions. Job-roles associated with this certification include cloud administrators, cloud engineers, and consultants ( $50 USD – This is a beta exam offering for a limited time).

This certification is for individuals who already have experience as a vSphere administrator, with virtualization (data center, storage and networking) technologies, as well as cloud administrators with at least one year of experience who are looking to expand their cloud skillsets.

Certification Paths:

It is recommended gain experience with VMware Cloud Infrastructure solutions and poses a VCP certification. It is also recommended to follow one or more current Official VM trainings before taking this (beta) exam. Currently the only hard requirement is to pass the exam VMware Cloud Infrastructure Administrator (6V1-11.23) Beta Exam.

Minimal Qualified Candidate:

The Minimally Qualified Candidate (MQC) earning the VMware Certified – VMware Cloud Infrastructure Administrator certification can install, configure, and maintain private and hybrid VMware Cloud infrastructure solutions; but may, occasionally, require assistance with carrying out the more complex administrative tasks. The candidate demonstrates a fundamental understanding of the VMware Cloud Infrastructure components. The candidate has a fundamental understanding of workload migration, including moving workloads to/from different VMware-based cloud offerings. The candidate understands the tools available for automating the deployment of VMware Cloud Infrastructure. The candidate can monitor the health and capacity of a multi-VMware cloud environment, including alerts and events of cloud services and workloads, but may occasionally need to research how to address issues and/or alerts. The candidate has a basic understanding of networking and security concepts, with a deeper understanding of both software-defined networking and network interconnectivity between clouds and security in-depth; but may occasionally need to research these topics. The candidate has a basic understanding of backup and disaster recovery as it relates to the VMware Cloud infrastructure. The candidate can apply all the requisite knowledge for, and has experience in, deploying and administrating VMware based private cloud environments and at least one VMware-based hyperscaler cloud solution with minimal assistance. The candidate possesses most of the knowledge shown in the exam sections (blueprint).

2 Cloud Infrastructure Architect

The announcement of this exam has just been made, and as of now, there is no additional information available other than the description provided below (source VMware Certification).

With this new VMware Cloud Infrastructure Architecture certification, employers will be able to see that you possess both proven technical skills and the ability to design and implement cloud architecture across clouds, regardless of the cloud environment in which they are deployed. 

Personal exam experience

Today (Friday 10 November), I had the opportunity to participate and I just took the VMware Cloud Infrastructure Administrator beta exam (6V11-11.23) . During this exam I also signed an Nondisclosure Agreement and therefore I am unable to provide specific details about the content of the questions. This beta exam consist an extensive number of Multiple-Choice questions, which will be used to select a smaller pool for the final exam. I personally found the exam to be enjoyable and closely aligned with the exam blueprint. This beta exam comprised a significant number of 98 questions (some with minor overlap) and allowed 165 minutes for completion. 15 minutes of the exam are reserved for an evaluation of your current knowledge level. The length of the beta phase varies, and it depends on how many times the exam has been taken.The final exam, however, will consist of a reduced number of questions chosen based on the beta testing outcomes. I would highly recommend considering taking this exam if you are comfortable with VMware solutions such as VMware vSphere, VMware Cloud, VMware NSX, VMware HCX, VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery, and various Hyperscalers. Along with theoretical knowledge, practical experience is also sought in this examination to ensure that you possess the ability to apply various configurations and determine suitable solutions for specific SDDC requirements. Some of the exam questions shared a similar approach to the VMware Cloud exam (based on VCF and VMware hyper scaler solutions), with the notable difference being that the questions also had practical relevance. Although I am confident in my performance, the results will be disclosed after the completion of the beta period. So all candidates will receive feedback and be notified of their pass or fail status at a later point in time. If you are also planning to take this exam, it might be advantageous, in terms of pricing, to do so during the beta period. The beta exam ended on 31^st December 2023.. All candidates who participated in the beta exam can expect to receive their results in approximately 3 to 4 weeks.
