Following my experience with the VCAP-VCF 9.0 Administrator Exam, I recently booked and took the other half of the coin: the brand-new VMware Certified Advanced Professional – VMware Cloud Foundation Architect (3V0-12.26) exam.
Since it is officially GA and publicly available, I wanted to jump right in and see how the design-focused track compares to the administrative side.
If you’ve been following the shift to role-based certifications since Broadcom’s acquisition, you know that VCF is at the center of everything. You might have already noticed that the exam study guide for the VCAP-VCF Architect exam is officially available on the Broadcom Education site.
So, how does the design-focused exam stack up, and what is it like to sit it? Let’s dive into my first impressions!
My First Impressions: A True Test of Design Depth
Just like the Administrator exam, this is a 60-item exam with a scaled passing score of 300. Candidates are allocated an appointment time of 135 minutes, which includes more than enough time for non-native English speakers. It is proctored and delivered through Pearson VUE.
Personally, I found the questions highly fair, very clear, and exceptionally well-crafted for a VCAP-level design exam. However, if you are expecting a quick walk-in, walk-out test like the Administrator exam (where I finished in under an hour), think again! The questions on the Architect exam are extremely in-depth.
You really have to analyze the architectural impacts of each scenario. I needed about 2 hours to complete the exam, spending a significant amount of time evaluating design trade-offs, conceptual models, and technical requirements.
Pro Tip: Because the questions are so detailed, my biggest piece of advice is a classic VCAP strategy: read every question twice! This is crucial so you can carefully filter through the scenario and isolate which requirements actually drive the only correct design decision.
Because this is a design and architecture test, you won’t find yourself answering questions about which CLI command to run or where to click in the SDDC Manager UI. Instead, the focus is squarely on architectural decisions, requirements analysis, and design trade-offs.
The question types are diverse, featuring multiple-choice, multiple-selection, build-list, matching, drag-and-drop. I particularly liked the matching and drag-and-drop diagrams—they make the exam feel like a real design workshop rather than just a rote-memorization test.
My conclusion?
This is an excellent, modern exam that is highly relevant for architects who actually design private clouds for a living. My tip stands: start preparing today so you’re ready to claim your VCAP badge!
Hot Study Topics: What You Must Focus On
Based on my experience sitting the exam, you cannot just gloss over the core design principles. Here are the specific technology areas and concepts where you should pay the most attention during your study:
1. NSX Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs) & Gateway Constraints
Designing logical networking in VCF 9 relies heavily on NSX Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs). Make sure you understand:
- How to design stateful services on Tier-0 and Tier-1 NSX gateways.
- The specific architectural constraints and limitations of VPC configurations when mapped to business requirements.
- How to select correct configuration options based on tenancy and scale.
2. IT Methodology (RACR & AMPRS)
Do not skip Section 1 of the blueprint! You need to be incredibly comfortable with:
- Differentiating between business and technical requirements.
- The RACR framework: mapping Requirements, Assumptions, Constraints, and Risks.
- The AMPRS framework: designing for Availability, Manageability, Performance, Recoverability, and Security. You will be asked to align these infrastructure qualities with design decisions.
3. VCF Automation, Projects, and Tenancy
The blueprint places a strong emphasis on multi-organization private cloud consumption. Be prepared to design:
- Tenancy models, including Provider and Organization structures.
- VCF Automation architectures: designing projects, namespaces, blueprints, content libraries, and granular access controls.
- Enterprise-level consumption strategies that govern resource allocation.
4. VCF Operations & Fleet Design
Managing a private cloud at scale requires robust monitoring and operations design. Pay attention to:
- VCF Fleet Design (Fleet Management): Designing strategies for fleet-wide monitoring, capacity forecasting, and operational intent.
- Integrating VCF Operations for Logs and VCF Operations for Networks seamlessly into your architectural monitoring strategy.
- Establishing configuration drift baselines.
Deep Dive: What the Exam Guide Covers
To help you jumpstart your preparation, let’s break down exactly what this exam tests based on the official blueprint.
The Blueprint Breakdown: A Beautiful Separation of Duties
VMware exam blueprints have transitioned to a standardized five-section structure. When I took the VCAP-VCF Administrator exam, I noticed a major twist: everything was crammed into Section 4 (Install, Configure, Administrate), and Sections 1, 2, 3, and 5 had zero testable objectives.
For the VCAP-VCF Architect (3V0-12.26) exam, we see the exact opposite twist—which represents a brilliant, logical separation of duties:
- Section 1 (IT Architectures, Technologies, Standards): INCLUDED (Objectives 1.1 to 1.5)
- Section 2 (VMware Products and Solutions): INCLUDED (Objectives 2.1 to 2.3)
- Section 3 (Plan and Design the VMware Solution): INCLUDED (Objectives 3.1 to 3.12)
- Section 4 (Install, Configure, Administrate): NO TESTABLE OBJECTIVES
- Section 5 (Troubleshoot and Optimize): NO TESTABLE OBJECTIVES
This means 100% of the testable material falls under Sections 1, 2, and 3! Broadcom has done a fantastic job separating the doers (Administrators) from the thinkers (Architects).

If you are planning to take this exam, Broadcom lists six recommended Advanced Design courses that line up perfectly with these objectives:

- VMware Cloud Foundation Automation: Advanced Design
- VMware Cloud Foundation Operation: Advanced Design

In addition, since VCF 9 is the primary baseline for the exam material, make sure to thoroughly study the VCF 9 release notes and documentation available on Broadcom’s Tech Docs site, as well as the private cloud resources on VMware’s website.
